Ever since you've heard about the poisonous dog food, you've probably wondered whether or not there was some other option (i.e. some way to shield your dog against these problems-at least until everything is sorted out). Luckily, there is: you can make your own dog food, which is both easy and inexpensive.

One good place to start is by making your dog some treats. You can try out some of these ideas; and, if they work, move on to cooking your dog food, too. This will help you shield your pup from potential death cookies, since you can easily make your own dog food treats. Baking skills are not required since some recipes for homemade dog food treats don't require you to bake at all.

The following is a list of just a few of the recipes you can use to make treats for your dog:
1. The Pizza Treat. Tossing your dog a slice of pizza would be pretty unhealthy, but giving him one of these tasty pizza treats will actually be good for his dental and digestive health. Start by gathering the following ingredients: 1) 3 and ¼ cups flour; 2) ¼ cups cornmeal; and 3) 1 tsp baking soda. Remember to pre-heat your oven to 325F. Additionally, grab some parmesan cheese, a can of tomato paste, and a bag of mozzarella.

Next, start to knead all of your crust ingredients into a dough. Once you finish that, start to mix all of your toppings in a bowl. Assemble the treat pizza and then cook it in the oven for approximately 25-30 minutes on 200F. Of course, you will want to leave the treat out on a rack to cool before you put it into packaging or give it to rover for a snack.

2. Sweet Treats. If your dog loves sweet treats, he'll go crazy for these. All you need to put them together is ½ cup powdered milk, 1 beaten egg, 1/3 cup margarine, ½ tbsp salt, ¾ cup hot water (or chicken broth), and 3 cups whole wheat flower. Once you have your ingredients in order, you can start to mix them in a large bowl. You will want to put the dry ingredients in first. Once you mix them together, then pour in the wet ones and stir. Eventually, you will end up with dough. Knead that and then cut it into bone shapes. Last, put your bone treats into a buttered pan and then bake for 50 minutes at 325F.

3. Tuna Cakes. At first, the word "tuna cake" may seem somewhat repulsive, but remember: you're not eating these; your dog is. And your dog will absolutely love them. All you have to do to make a tuna cake is mash up 2 cans of tuna, add 2 eggs and 3 cups flour. Take a portion of the mixture and shape into little cakes. Bake at low heat. It's this easy and your dogs will drool over it for days. Other recipes for low-protein dog food like this may also make use of other fish varieties.

While your dog will love you for giving him a baked treat, both you and him are better off if you limit the treat giving to a certain time of day. Otherwise, things can potentially get out of control. Additionally, remember that using natural ingredients in your recipes for homemade dog food that are eaten as is - without additives, preservatives or the use of heat - is the best way to ensure that your dog is taking in the nutrients that are meant to be in his system. Remember this when you decide to make your own dog food.
